The Spaghetti Monster Lab
A PBL Lab on Separation of Concerns
Separation of Concerns: The Spaghetti Monster
Act 1: The Hook
Have you ever looked at code and felt like you were trying to untangle a bowl of pasta? When all the logic, styling, and data fetching are mixed together, you have what engineers call "Spaghetti Code."
Socratic Prompt
What happens when you need to change a single ingredient in a giant pot of mixed soup? How might this relate to changing a feature in a massive, tangled codebase?
Act 2: Mental Model
Think of a well-organized kitchen. There are separate stations for chopping vegetables, cooking on the stove, and plating the food. This is the Separation of Concerns. Each component or module in software should have one specific job or responsibility.
Socratic Prompt
If you assign specific responsibilities to different modules, how does that affect the time it takes to find and fix a bug?
Act 3: The Rabbit Hole
Consider a modern web application. If the database connection, the user interface logic, and the authentication are all in one file, it becomes unmaintainable. Splitting these into layers (like Model-View-Controller) allows teams to work simultaneously without stepping on each other's toes.
Socratic Prompt
Can you identify a real-world scenario where separating concerns might actually introduce more complexity? When is it better to keep things simple and combined?
